The NYO&W made its last run in late March of 1957. At that time they owned nine FT A-B sets, five F3As, two F3Bs, and twenty-one NW2s. They had owned five GE 44Ts that were sold off around 1950.

Several days ago I received the NRHS NEWS – July 2017 in the mail. The newsletter included an article that the Ontario & Western Historical Society (O&WRHS) had purchased ex O&W #105 GE 44T from the Southern Railway of New Jersey (SRNJ); and, subsequently had it shipped to Steamtown where it will permanently reside. O&WRHS intends to first cosmetically restore the unit and later possibly make it operational.

Sometime prior to #105 spending some years on the SRNJ, it spent over thirty years on the Salt Lake Garfield & Western (SLGW) as their #DS2. On a business trip to Salt Lake in July 1982, I had an opportunity to take some photos of the SLGW. They were very hospitable and gave me a cab ride in their rare ALCO S6 #DS4. However, they would not let me enter the engine house because I was not wearing safety shoes. So, my opportunities to photograph SLGW #DS2 were limited. Nevertheless, I took the posted photo, better than nothing. I probably will never again get an opportunity to photograph an ex NYO&W unit.

The NYO&W had a total of five GE 44T units #101-#105. Do any units other than #105 survive?

Further, the NYO&W had a total of twenty-one EMD NW2 units #111-#131. #115 went to NP. #111-#113 went to RI. The remaining eighteen went to the NYC. Do any NW2 units survive?

Unfortunately, no NYO&W F-Units survive. However, it would be great if one of the F3As at Steamtown would be painted, lettered, and numbered NYO&W #504. What do you think?

Several of the ex-O&W NW2's lasted into/through Conrail. I think Walter Rich bought one (116), which was repainted in O&W colors and I think is now on the Ulster & Delaware tourist line in New York. I thought a second 44-tonner had survived, but maybe not. Around 1967 NYC bought the remaining O&W FT's that had been stored on the EL at Croxton Yard in NJ and traded them in on GP40's, so some ex-O&W Blomberg trucks might still be running around.

DS-2 on the road in July 1980. Never realized it was ex-NYO&W.

This is a great photo. It appears this unit bears #DS1, whereas the earlier post refers to SLG&W affixing DS-2 to their former NYO&W unit. Does this mean the SLG&W acquired two NYO&W units?

That's a "DS-2" on the side. This is out around the SLC Airport area in the more simple "pre-Olympian" days.

Interesting.

According to Don Strack's UtahRails website, SLG&W DS 1 was ex-NYO&W 105 and the DS 2 was 101. The DS 2 was at the Western Pacific RR Museum in Portola for many years then traded to Western Railway Museum at Rio Vista Jct. WRM's roster notes that there is confusion is the DS 2 is 101 or 105, but they definitely have DS 2 in their collection.

Arcata and Mad River 104, ex- NYO&W 103, is at Roots of Motive Power in Willits, CA.

So it looks like 4 of the 5 44 tonners survive. Amazing.

Wish 1 of the ex-Sacramento Northern, ex-NYO&W F3As survived, but I would want it painted orange and silver! :-)

My sources of information regarding the disposition of NYO&W #101 and #105 to SLGW differ.
Two sources indicate NYO&W #101 and #105 became SLGW #DS1 and #DS2 respectively; they are NYO&W in the Diesel Age by Robert E. Mohowski and NYO&W in Color by Paul Lubliner.
The SLGW Roster included in Diesel Locomotive Rosters The Railroad Magazine Series indicates NYO&W #101 and #105 became SLGW #DS2 and #DS1.
After also considering information at UtahRails.NET and photos at RailroadPictureArchives.NET, I believe that NYO&W #101 and #105 became SLGW #DS2 and #DS1 respectively.

Preserved NYO&W GE 44T units are:
#101 (SLGW #DS2) at Western Railway Museum in Rio Vista Junction CA
#104 (HRT #5) at Southeastern Railway Museum in Duluth GA
#105 (SLGW #DS1) owned by O&WRHS at Steamtown in Scranton, PA

Cannot confirm that Arcata & Mad River (AMR) #104 was NYO&W #103. According to AMR Roster in Diesel Locomotive Rosters The Railroad Magazine Series, the build date for AMR #104 is 1945. The build date for NYO&W #103 is 1941 so this is inconsistent. I would need to see something further in order to confirm that AMR #104 is ex NYO&W #103.

Roots of Motive Power says their AMR 104 is construction number 18197 built April 1945 as NYO&W 103, later Fernwood Columbia & Gulf D-3 before passing to AMR:

Seems pretty unlikely that AMR 104 is ex-NYO&W 103.

I promised some support data from the files of the Adirondack Scenic regarding the mystery of the 105 and 101. Chuck Rowlee the Trainmaster of Adirondack Scenic graciously kept the mechanical file and checked it out for details, sending me faxed copies of some of the information.

From our records and those of SLGW, here goes

O&W 105 became SLGW DS-1 and O&W 101 became SLGW DS-2

I still can't recall the exact location of the physical verification of the numbers on the locomotive itself....sorry, but am pretty positive that indeed NYO&W 105 became SLGW DS-1, which was the unit that was just moved to New Jersey. Perhaps the new owner can comment further. I simply can't recreate that trail of 7-8 years ago.

He was an NYSW director, and paid for the O&W paint job.
