Nostalgia & History > Friday F-unit: The Zephyr in WinterDate: 07/07/17 10:16 Friday F-unit: The Zephyr in Winter Author: march_hare The Rio Grande Zephyr winds through a curve near Tunnel 29, just east of Pinecliffe, CO. It's just another Saturday morning in the Front Range, early February of 1980. But I suspect this is the most photographed F-unit ever. I know within my collection, it appears more often than any other.

When was the grade crossing incident that caused shop forces to fabricate the "slim line" pilot"? I never cared for the look of 5771 after the pilot was replaced. Cheers, Jim Fitch Date: 07/07/17 14:04 Re: Friday F-unit: The Zephyr in Winter Author: march_hare As I recall, it wasn't a grade crossing encounter but rather an encounter with some misplaced Colorado geology.
Timing? When I first rode in January 1979, 5771 had a standard pilot. A whole bunch of pix from right after I moved in May of 1979 were led by GP40s, so I think that puts some limits on when it happened. |
