Nostalgia & History > Tuesday Two - Muskingum ElectricDate: 07/11/17 05:16 Tuesday Two - Muskingum Electric Author: refarkas krm152 asked for information on the Muskingum Electric, so here are a couple Muskingum Electric photos from June 1982. These were both taken south of Cumberland, Ohio. Electric railroads sometimes put their poles at an angle, and this is shown here.

What did the large symbol on the sides of the coal hoppers look like? Date: 07/11/17 07:06 Re: Tuesday Two - Muskingham Electric Author: refarkas Sorry. I have no idea what the symbol was.
Bob Date: 07/11/17 09:35 Re: Tuesday Two - Muskingham Electric Author: lynnpowell They were set up for automated train operation, but #100 has a man in the "engineer's" seat. Did they go to manned train operation at one time? Did the railroad have any "at grade" public road crossings? Was Southern Pacific somehow involved in the power company?
Date: 07/11/17 10:10 Re: Tuesday Two - Muskingham Electric Author: intermodalres I believe that they put someone in the cab for a "just in case" reason. They did cross SR83 about halfway through their route. Their shops were close to that location. I have a picture of one of the cars I will post shortly.

James R.(Jim) Baker Whittier, CA Date: 07/11/17 10:34 Re: Tuesday Two - Muskingham Electric Author: intermodalres Here are a few pictures from my trip there in March of 1988. I apologize that I do not know the locations specifically. I had no idea where I was. My friend was driving and he knew where we needed to go. The first picture is near the load out. That is the boom of Big Muskie sticking up from the top of the hill. The second picture is at Pole #132, and is a northbound run with the motor pushing the empty train. Third picture is close to the south end of the line, Pole #382. It is also northbound. They mounted a headlight on the rear car for these moves. I tried looking at Google Earth to try and figure out where these were, but to no avail. The land has been reworked and reclaimed quite a bit. There are also many mining access roads in the area, which can also mimic an old RR grade.

I apologize to the person wanting to know what the large logo looked like. The picture was more blurred than I remember it being, and back then I did not take many freight car shots.

Thanks very much for posting your photos. Date: 07/11/17 15:35 Re: Tuesday Two - Muskingum Electric Author: kevink To help future searches, it's the Muskingum Electric Railroad.
Thanks for sharing all these great photos. Date: 07/11/17 23:39 Re: Tuesday Two - Muskingum Electric Author: krm152 The signs on the sides of the units read:
"DANGER * KEEP CLEAR * TRAIN UNMANNED". ALLEN Date: 07/12/17 05:38 Re: Tuesday Two - Muskingum Electric Author: cjvrr Thanks for the additional photos and the text of what was on the emblem.
Neat operation. Date: 07/12/17 19:36 Re: Tuesday Two - Muskingum Electric Author: Gateway97 I saw this in operation once, in March of 1982 (no photos). We were camping and hiking on the Ohio Power lands and saw quite a few movements. One interesting thing to note: The loco would blow for crossings when it was leading (we were near a crossing with gates). But on the return trip with the hoppers leading, there was a horn set mounted on the frame of the rear car that would automatically give a short "bamp" every few hundred feet .
