Old SP from 70's (Goats)
Author: ssloansjca

1115 in Oakland - Southern Pacific SW8 1115 is in West Oakland on August 8, 1974.
Reportedly SP 1115 is an EMD SW8 built as SP 4610 SP Class DF302, Serial Number: 17337 Order No: 4180 Frame Number: 4180-7 Built: March 1953. In 1963 it's class was changed to SP Class DS-602. In the 1965 renumbering it became SP 1115 SP Class AS408-2. In 1977 it was sold to Chrome Crankshaft and in November 1978 it became Yreka Western Railroad 21.

A lower resolution version of this was posted on May 1, 2014 to Altamont Press.
According to Bill K. on Altamont Press, "The SW-8 #1115, (as depicted) was acquired by the Yreka Western RR in November of 1978 was issued the number 21. She currently sits on a YW siding in Montague, CA. Her sister SW-8, (#20) formerly Ex-S.P. #4608, then #1113, was also acquired by the YW in November 1978. She sat unused for several years due to having a bad crankshaft. Then she was used for parts to keep #21 operating. The 20 was scrapped in the summer of 2010. I have spent many hours in both 20 and 21, (mostly 21) hauling freight and even using 21 to pull the Blue Goose when the steam loco was B.O. Ahhh ... those were the good old days!"
George Andrews asked on Altamont Press, "Is that a Trombone Air horn under the cab roof??? The Horizontal pipe thingie..."
OPRRMS responded, "The whistle itself has been removed, but the piping is still there. The location of the photo is on the 50 Lead in front of the switchman's shanty at the Homestead, which was the on duty location at the Adeline Street end of the West Oakland yard. Steve, your dad would've worked there many, many times."

Actually in the 1965 renumbering 1115, nee4610, was classified as "E"S408-2 not "A"S408-2 for obvious reasons.
See, I really do read some of the captions. ;^) Thanks for these Steve.

The 1115 ran on the SD&AE for many years, got a few cab rides on it!
Later it and 5 other SW8s were sold to MTS as part of the sale of the SD&AE,
the 1115 and 5 other SW8s were sold to Kyle Railways when they ran the SD&AE.
The 1115 and 3 other SW8s were loaded on depressed center flatcars and hauled out of San Diego
by the Santa Fe to other Kyle run shortlines. Two were scrapped in San Diego, the 1110 and 1118!!
