Nostalgia & History > 2007: A surprise in Columbus, NEDate: 11/13/17 06:12 2007: A surprise in Columbus, NE Author: bandob In September 2007, I had occasion to visit Omaha, NE. One day, I headed West along the UP main to take photos, getting as far as Columbus. The attractive station was still standing. I was wondering why there was such a relatively large group of people waiting beside the Eastbound track. "Can't be that many rail fans in Columbus," I wondered. Imagine my surprise when a passenger train arrived.

Alas, the depot at Columbus has been razed.

Sad to hear the news about the depot. It's rather funny seeing the baggage car,"PROUD HERITAGE". The great yellow BORG offered it to the city, if they would move it. Oh! What a wonderful gesture you say. It will only cost the city $750,000 to move it! The UP knew they would never be able to afford it. We'll tear down our 108 year old classic depot and build a new $1.5 million dollar building somewhere else. "PROUD HERITAGE" my eye! |
