Happy Thanksgiving - A Simple Rock Island Scene
Author: refarkas

Happy Thanksgiving.
Here is a simple scene from my early days of railfanning. Rock Island 768 is switching in Davenport, Iowa on August 19, 1973.

That is the Oscar Mayer plant along River Drive.
The track is all gone now and the plant will be
in the near future. They are building a smaller plant North of I-80.

I recognized the building right away, never realized it had rail on that side, nice post, proves
you can learn something new every day.

Nice photo of a twenty-five year old NW2 doing what it was built for.
The Rock still had around six and one half years left when you took this photo.
Thanks for posting and Happy Thanksgiving.

The RI didn't interchange much to the CB&Q at Davenport,
But what they did went East (right)and crossed River Drive
at an angle. No flashers and 4 lanes of traffic. The
switch crews would take a case of fusees with them. They would
light them and then start pitching them out in the street before attempting
to cross. Even then, it was not unusual for them to call
West Davenport Yard and tell the YM to call the police, "They
got another one"!!
About a year or two before shut down, they finally put flashers on
the crossing.

Does anyone know what Oscar Meyer would receive or ship in a plain 40 foot boxcar?

Thanks and I hope everyone had a Happy Thanksgiving,

When they had the kill floor in operation it was mostly tankage.
Once they shut down the kill operation, that was pretty much the end
of railroad traffic. They did get coal for their power plant until they
converted to natural gas.
