Nostalgia & History > The operator at Virginia Lane Cumberland, on Chessie 1980Date: 03/15/18 11:53 The operator at Virginia Lane Cumberland, on Chessie 1980 Author: Roadjob These images were taken at Virginia Lane on the west end of Cumberland yard in late 1979 and early 1980. The original intent was to write an article for Trains Magazine, but life got in the way and I never finished the article. Now, the operator, station, and interest are gone. This is a belated salute to one busy guy.

We used to hang out at the "Lane" and watch these guys work along with the car checkers and yard crews. Love this video tribute!

Did he also operate an interlocking machine? Did the switchtender also handle the main track switches? If I understand correctly there was an operator and a switchtender. Very interesting operation. Unlike today where you tone a DS 1000 miles away. Thank you for documenting. Date: 03/15/18 17:11 Re: The operator at Virginia Lane Cumberland, on Chessie 1980 Author: Pork Awesome
