Kent in CArmel Valley Date: 07/09/18 14:19 Re: A Third & Townsend before & after Author: drumwrencher Great shot of the 4815. Bayshore men called them “4800’s” for many years after the 1965 general renumbering. One couldn’t refer to them afterwards as “3000’s” because they wouldn’t want to confuse them with the lighter GPs. As passenger power, the GPs shared the 3000 series. I believe SP set aside 3000-3299 for varnish engines... IIRC.

I don't think so, since a Trainmaster was a supervisory/management position back in those days, thus he probably would have been dressed in a dark suit with the appropriate hat. The hat was very important in those days. There was no "trainmaster" (official type of person)in SF but a terminal superintended. The last one was J. F. Bays, a.k.a. "Big Daddy", but I'm not sure whether he retired before or after the depot was torn down. If I recall correctly, the last of SP's Train Master locomotives were scrapped the same year that the Third & Townsend depot was demolished - 1975. Did they work local mail like an RPO, or was it bulk storage mail for one destination?
