WAG running extra (#53): Dueling steam in Topeka
Author: santafe199

Even though this image was scanned from a B/W print, I really like the resulting texture. The raw feel of the photo leads the casual observer to imagine a sort of ‘showdown’ scene from the Old West. We have a pair of Union Pacific’s huge and apparently hungry 9000s looking at each other at the ‘feeding trough’, otherwise known as the coaling tower in Topeka Yard. What a RR world it was, 7 decades ago…

1. UP 4-12-2 #9036 in Topeka, KS in the 1940s (my estimation). Scanned from a B/W print.

Thanks for looking back!

Did they have tenders with 8 wheel trucks?

Not to my knowledge. Pretty sure all the UP 9000 class locomotives had 6 wheel Commonwealth trucks.

Yes, that’s why he said a pair of 9000’s in the original post
