What I want to know is how the fluting was painted? How did the North Shore painters or the builder's painters keep it so straight while doing the feathering? How did they do the feathering?

It is a pretty neat effect. Model Railroader had a Paint Shop(?) article in the 70's or 80's that discussed this as well as how to model it.

Even though I knew it was a painted 3D surface, my eyes were telling me it was a raised surface. I had to touch it to confirm that it was a flat surface. Crazy!
