More Rochester 400 Photos -- Walt Dunlap

1, 2, and 3. C&NW GP7 1651 with the westbound Rochester 400 at Rochester, MN on May 28, 1963.  The GP7 took over at Madison, WI after a breakdown of the original unit.  The geep had a steam generator.  I wonder if it was working on short notice.  At least it was not January!  [EDIT] Note the comment below that it was an eastbound train.

4. C&NW eastbound Rochester 400 at Winona, MN on December 4, 1962.

5. C&NW's first eastbound Rochester 400 into Rochester after the strike on October 1, 1962.  Old Freight House at left.

6. C&NW E8A 5030A with the last eastbound Rochester 400 on July 23, 1963 at 14th Ave., Rochester, MN

Very interesting stuff.  Anyone know the story about the only E8 the C&NW with a snowplow?

Photos one through three are of #518, the eastbound train.  The depot in Rochester was on the south side of the mainline,
the train is heading toward you, therefore east.   Also, the Rochester Municipal Power Plant with its four stacks would
have been visible behind the train, if westbound.  Also, I do not believe the 5024 was the only E with a snow plow pilot.
As I recall, they changed out the pilots on the Rochester and Dakota '400' units in the spring and fall.  I think the reason
was the heavy drifting of snow between Lewiston and points west, in fact, in the early 50s the Dakota '400' got stuck in a drift
just west of Lewiston.  By the time they were able to clear the cut and get moving west, there was not an egg or loaf of bread
to be had in the little town of about 900.  As I recall, it took about two days.  Today they would call it a "Service Interruption"!

All of these photos are wonderful. The Winona Depot scene is really interesting, with the sloping platform. I suppose the Mississippi bridge was close by?

The C & NW depot in Winona still exists.  The Jefferson Pub & Grill occupies the structure.

Nice shots!! Old C&NW RR passenger train and engine crews based in Winona, MN and worked to and from Mankato, MN
