The "Rotating Banner Railroad Crossing Signal" was a product of Griswold Railway Signal Company of Minnepolis. There were many of these installed by C&NW on the line from Winona to Mankato after the commencement of "400" service in 1936. The signals in Lewiston sat in the middle of the street on raised diamond shaped islands each with two four sided red markers that warned motorists of the impact potential. The agent at Lewiston had to manually turn on the signal island lights at dusk and turn them off at dawn. He was paid fifty cents extra to do this, night and morning. Prior to the automatic Griswold signals, he had to protect the crossing by going to the middle of Fremont Street holding a yellow hand held STOP sign where he remained until the "400" had passed Thanks, Marty for sharing more of these Walt Dunlap treasures. When I lived on the"Alco Line" In Pierre, SD, from 1966 to 1969, 1613 and it's brother 1624 along with RS36, I think, 405 were the regulars on the Huron-Pierre legs of 495, the train shown here, and 482. It was after I moved to the Black Hills in 1969 that those two rebuilds started to stray off that assignment. Nick Tharalson, Marion, IA |
