Chasing a Chicago Great Western Freight -- Walt Dunlap
Author: MartyBernard

Walt chased and photographed CGW Train 43 for about 30 miles between Randolph and Kenyon, MN on August 31, 1962  The train had a F-unit lash-up of ABBBA.

The leader was CGW F5A 115-A built February 1949 and became CNW 215.  Walt's first four photos are near Randolph and the last two at Kenyon.

Enjoy,
Marty Bernard

I’d chase a train like that too! Good shots!

These rare slides are amazing.  My favorite is the overhead down on shot . Thanks for sharing.

Check sequence: #5 is off the Milw Rd overpass at Kenyon but #6 must be somewhere north of there.

Best regards,

I was with Walt on the chase.  It was really thrillilng to get the CGW photos.  What is remarkable is that as a high school kid, we were able to get this operation.   The next day, we took train 14 from Hayfield to Minneapolis, my only ride on the CGW.

What kind of speed did the train make?

I would suggest about 45 MPH.  The line had ABS Block Signals.
