F unit Friday from the reject boxes . . .
Author: 3rdswitch

.   .   .   on a cruddy dark overcast day in the early seventies a "San Diegan" was San Diego bound on the Santa Fe at Bandini, CA, a mile short of it's first stop out of LAUPT at Pico Rivera.

I think that is the dirtiest engine I even saw on a Santa Fe passenger train.

This was an Amtrak passenger train, not the same :-)

Well, not exactly. Until 1973, alll trains operating out of LA were serviced by Santa Fe crews and operations at 6th street. Trains operating on Santa Fe lines were supervised by Santa Fe managers. For all practical purposes, this still was a Santa Fe train. I have seen worse then that lead F unit in Santa Fe service in 1970, including faded, peeling paint, and often times the silver overspray above the front pilot.

Amtrak was leasing Santa Fe power at this time. Nothing prevented Santa Fe from painting or washing those locomotives. The same facilities that serviced the Super Chief until 1971 still existed at the time of this photo.
