From the Broadway - a reroute -- Dec 75
Author: gcm

On board the westbound Broadway Limited past Gary,Ind we stopped. Talking to the conductor he said there was a derailment ahead and we would be rerouted off the ex-PRR line.

(1) Here we go - starting the reroute.

(2) The rest of the consist including one of the ex-PRR twin unit diners. Enjoyed a fine breakfast and it was nice to ride the cars on their old home rails.

(3) Headed down new territory.
For years I didn't know where we went but I think I know now.

(4) Indiana Harbor Belt SW7 8859 is a nice clue.
This must have been on the IHB.

(5-6) An abandoned station in Hammond,Ind.
The real clue was the tower in the distance. Unfortunately I didn't get a close shot of it.
I went to the other side of the vestibule and saw an EL unit.
Zooming in on the tower (and also a crossing tower) I didn't know which one this was till TO's  GPutz (Gerry) posted a great tower shot a couple weeks ago ---

It looked familiar and I think I finally ID the tower in my shot as Hohman Tower - thanks Gerry !

(7-8) We passed EL GP35 2569 probably just past the tower.

(9) A big right hand turn. Is this still IHB trackage?

(10-12) Crossing a few main lines.
The first looks like the ex-Nickel Plate with the EL next.
A few E8 units were waiting for us to pass.
Another line next to the EL was the CSS&SB ?
Looking at Google - the EL row is all grass.
Did this crossing have a name? I believe State Line was a little further east.

(13) I just liked the steam on this one.

Any Chicago experts feel free to tell me where I was wrong in trying to figure out where we were.

Tolleston - IHB - Calumet Park Intlg.
Calumet Park  Intlg - PC ex-PRR  SC&S Branch - Colehour Jct.
Back onto the regular route at Colehour Jct.
That is my guess.
SC&S crossed the NKP, C&WI and CSS&SB at Hegewisch.

Nice rare mileage on the IHB!

You're welcome.  It does look like Hohman Avenue tower, Hammond, Indiana.  I don't remember seeing that station in '80, though.  Gerry

gcm:  at this late date, do you recall approximately how late you were reaching your destination due to the detour?

Great coverage of this reroute. You certainly covered it well.

I don't remember how late we ended up but I don't think it was to bad.
The scheduled arrival was 10:35am and it had been daylight for a while.

So many options available back then!  Thanks for documenting that interesting detour!

So within a few miles, you crossed the N&W/ NKP going west at Hohman, then turned toward the northeast on the SC&S and crossed it again at Burnham.
