Business cars painted to match Amtrak?
Author: railstiesballast

Valmont's thread below shows SP's Oakland painted in Amtrak colors.
Which leads to my question: How many other railroads painted their business cars per Amtrak's directive?
Can anyone share a UP, BN, or other business car photo in Amtrak colors.
I cannot imagine anyone talking the UP into painting their cars like that.

at New Orleans in May 1978.

I do not know how many Class One Railroads painted their business cars back then; however. I heard from a reliable source that a few of these roads told Amtrak to go fly a kite, they were not going to do this and that they owned the railroads, thus their cars can be hauled as they are.  During that period of time many private cars were complying in order to operate with Amtrak.  The local private car group called Railroad Passenger Cars (RRP) originally owned all ex-B&O cars.  As they began to acquire newer light-weight cars, in order to operate with Amtrak, they decided to paint all their cars in Amtrak Colors.  By the time they had repainted three of their coaches and an ex-New Haven Diner, the Chessie System came to them and wanted to lease a number of their cars in 1977 for the Chessie Steam Special to celebrate the 150th birthday of the B&O Railroad.  Chessie then took all the cars that they rented from RRP down to their Huntinton, WV shop and painted them into the Chessie colors.  This included two of the coaches that RRP had just painted in Amtrak colors.
I've attached a photo that has been shown on here before of an RRP (ex-Long Island, ex-Delaware, Lackawanna & Western "Phoebe Snow") 83 seat coach, #8302 in the consist of a Chessie operated commuter train with other Amtrak coaches.  Photo taken at Camden Station in Baltimore, Maryland by RRP member Shelley Hopkins.
At some point during 1977 I believe, Amtrak rescinded their decision about cars having to be painted in their paint scheme.

At the time this edict was in place, UP’s only Amtrak operation was trains 5-6 between Denver and Ogden, so if probably wasn’t as much of an issue for them.  Ironically, that train’s all-Amtrak colors were often broken up by a UP-assigned lead unit.

No Missouri Pacific business cars were ever repainted into Amtrak colors, either, and they continued to be carried at will on Amtrak trains.

Penn Central had at least one business car painted in the Amtrak scheme.

#9 on 8-31-74 at WoodCrest

#10 on 4-26-75 at Woodcrest

It wasn't just business cars that Amtrak tried to bully into having their paint, they also tried to get all private car owners to do it. At that time, I owned an ex-L&N sleeper (Florida Surf) that was all stainless with black lettering. I ended up getting my congressman involved, as some other car owners probably did. It wasn't long before the policy was rescinded.

BN did have one x-Q car (the "Burlington Northern" ?) in Amtrak paint for awhile. There's a pic of it in one the BN Annuals from the 1970s.

Here's PC 4 wb at Paoli.

As I remember the policy, at least when it was first announced, the requirement for Amtrak livery only applied to certain "premier" trains, of which the Broadway was one.   I think these were trains that [ usually ] were formed of cars that had all been repainted into Amtrak colors.   Was the 'order' later extended system wide ?

At least one SCL/Family Lines car, 309 I think, got Amtrak paint and perhaps one or two more.  I can't find a photo at the moment.

I think there were four: Broadway Limited, Coast Starlight, Super Cap/Southwest Limited and ... perhaps the Panama Limited. (Which would explain the ICG car).

I don't recal Santa Fe ever falling for this demand from Amtrak.  Probably because they never needed Amtrak to pull their business cars...they did it themselves.

Several SP cars made it into Amtrak paint. Here are some I found online over the years.
