Berkeley, California, March 10, 1985, Interesting Day On The SP
Author: FiveChime

1. SP SDP45 3208 on the point of Amtrak #5. This was a Sunday afternoon so 3208 was probably returning from
Weekend Warrior work with other commute locomotives running over Donner.

2. During this time SP was pooling power with Rio Grande and here we see DRGW SD40T2 5374 with other similar units eastbound
through Berleley. Rio Grande had Nathan M3 horns on most of their 2nd generation and later units and the hogger working this train
was having fun playing with the M3 on 5374.

Gourmet Ghetto, first I've heard Fourth st called that :-). When I was working the area in the early ninties, I dont recall any service to the sand/cement? plant.

Oops, this isn't the Gourmet Ghetto. Just looked it up. Here's the right location for that: "=14px"North Berkeley’s Gourmet Ghetto is located along Shattuck Avenue from Delaware to Rose Street, and along Vine from Shattuck to Walnut St."

Enjoyed both videos!
Especially the hogger playing those DRGW horns.
Nice video conversion job (to digital) too, was that from VHS or Film?

Loved the videos, had fun showing my kids what the SP used to look like when I was a kid, especially the caboose!

Cal Ink still had cars in 2000/2001 when I was riding the Capital Corridor for my commute. And there would be a hopper at the sand place.

That stretch from Albany to Emeryville had lots industry when I was a kid. But after the 89’ quake, things seemed to have changed rather quickly.

I believe March of 1985 was also when Caltrain F40s starting taking over the commute runs on the pennisula - so maybe the SDP45 was set free to roam at that time?

Great memories of the mid-80s,

Rich

Excellent videos!  What kind of cars did Cal Ink receive?
