What to do on a hot day in the Valley while on a KM

One of the crew has found that sticking your head out of an open window helps a little. Here's X-9014 east rolling down the San Joaquin Valley on a 100 plus Summer day somewhere between Manteca and Turlock.

I'm sure those cabs got toasty with all that glass...

LOL. Don't show this to the steam board!

All the glass certaining was/is unique. Thanks for sharing.

Great photo!  Actually it looks like he's standing on the deck behind the cab.

No he was leaning out of the window that the KM's had. Here's another KM on a hot day and as you can see the window behind the engineers seat is open.

You'll also notice there's about a hundred cars back there and one unit.

Looks like the Stanislaus River bridge at Ripon.

Awesome shot! They were truly unique in so many ways. Shame they didn't work out, but they were bucking some big competition in EMD and GE.

Neither GM or GE had any traction motor that would approach the 700 hp/axle capabiliy
of the KM.

(Because KM's didn't have traction motors, right?  "Diesel hydraulic" Oil fluid drive?  But the Alco dual engine locomotives did have diesel hydraulic drive axles, too, right?  How many HP per axle on the ALCo dual engines?)

(answering my own question, 4300 hp, 6 axles, 717 hp/axle.  So ALCo exceeded the KM's 700 hp/axle)
