Here is an Emil Albrecht photo of UP 4-12-2 9046, with a train. But there is no date or location. Anyone care to guess as to the location?

As a tech note, it is a 4-1/4 by 2-1/2 negative, and I scanned it as a 16-bit image. The sky seems to have a bit more drama compared to an 8-bit image.

Hello Don,

I'd guess somewhere along the Montpelier - McCammon portion of the OSL.  Emil had other photos in that area and the 4-12-2s were regular power on that line around that time.

The TO version of the image doesn't have enough resolution to be helpful, but if you can zoom in on your version perhaps the signal number and/or train indicator might give us some helpful information.

Sad to say, the overall resolution isn't very good, which explains why it is in the "Extras, Duplicates, Not to be mounted" box. The signal number isn't readable, and the engine number board is just barely readable.

First car looks like a ventilated boxcar? Pretty unusual. Can you make out the roadname?

I think it's "Southern"

Thanks, but it looks more like a Seaboard Air Line vent to me, and they had a lot more than Southern Railway late steam era.

Could be, can't really tell.  If so, it narrows the possible locations down to just the three segments of double track that existed on that OSL line - around Kemmerer, near Montpelier, and west of Blaser.

So what products were typically handled in those cars? 

Could it have handled livestock?  I'm curious about that since the car was handled on the headend of the train.

Probably keeping a close watch on the watermelons.

Ventiltated box cars were often called watermellon box cars. With the vent doors in place, it probably is handling some sort of produce which does not require refrigeration, but could use some air flow. With the solid doors, it could haul any type of boxcar freight which would not contaminate the car. It normally would not be used for livestock.

The ventilated boxcars were very popular on southeastern railroads during the steam era.

Good guess. They are not much different in appearance. I enjoyed seeing the picture of the Southern car.
