Matched set Sunday, Santa Fe . . .
Author: 3rdswitch

.   .   .   in JUN '73, a westbound train has just started the hard climb up the east slope of Cajon Pass between the stations of Thorn and Hesperia, CA, led by a matched set of big 45's.

Those cantilever signal bridges in the background look like they either still have semaphore signals, or they just lost them.  I don't see any searchlights.

They're out of service. TCS (CTC) was in effect by then as indicated by the westward train operating on the North Track at that location. These signals were relocated down the hill around the right-hand curve in the distance.

A great ATSF slide !
I preferred this paint scheme to the last scheme ATSF had before the merger with BN.  Thanks for posting. --Kelly

Thanks for getting this shot for me, Joe! In June of '73 I was a fresh HS grad, turning 18 & chasing this long-legged blonde sophomore around! Railfanning wouldn't arrive for at least another 2 years... :^)

BTW: During my career the SD45 was my favorite engine to ride in.

Yep, those signal bridges were at MP 42.8. The intermediates were moved to 41.1. IIRC, that was a 45 mph curve there.

Great shot, JB!  The first thing I do every morning is look for 3rdswitch in the names.
