Good question.Was on a railroad-by-railroad basis. For example, SF trains around Newton first began working w/out them in 8/84. These were local jobs. The waycars actually returned the following yr and became an on-again off again process until being fully in place during 1991. Mainline jobs across the Middle Div 1st & 2nd districts began working w/out them in 1/85 but was not fully in place until the following yr. I will have to look in my father-in-law UTU timebook in that 85-86 time period to see what he entered (he retired @ Newton 8/30/86 and for the final two yrs most of his runs were w/no waycar working a pool turn.
