Milwaukee Monday - Iowa
Author: zr190

The Milwaukee ran a transfer type job between Nahant (Davenport) and East Moline.  It was called the Jitney.
I never found anyone who knew why it was called that.
This slide of MILW 734 on the Jitney is from November of 1975.

Very  nice.  Grew up watching and on occasion riding these FM switchers in Rockford, Il.  Thanks.

Nice photo.  Reminds me of trains I used to see on K&IT.

Interesting name for a train.  I think of a "jitney" as a crew transport van; at least we often called them that back in my PC/Conrail days.  Neat flatcar load, too!

Seems to me , "Jitney" refers to a nickle , which was the cost of a ride on a very old bus-type vehicle.  They were called  "Jitney Taxis" , and developed into the Greyhound-type busses which were so common in later years.  This was written up in a short history of the Greyhound Corporation , and provided to passengers back in the 1950's .
