Nostalgia & History > Milwaukee Monday - IowaDate: 09/21/20 05:33 Milwaukee Monday - Iowa Author: zr190 The Milwaukee ran a transfer type job between Nahant (Davenport) and East Moline. It was called the Jitney.
I never found anyone who knew why it was called that. This slide of MILW 734 on the Jitney is from November of 1975. zr190 Date: 09/21/20 06:10 Re: Milwaukee Monday - Iowa Author: Quakerengr Very nice. Grew up watching and on occasion riding these FM switchers in Rockford, Il. Thanks.

ALLEN Date: 09/21/20 13:15 Re: Milwaukee Monday - Iowa Author: bobdavis Interesting name for a train. I think of a "jitney" as a crew transport van; at least we often called them that back in my PC/Conrail days. Neat flatcar load, too!
Bob Date: 09/30/20 18:23 Re: Milwaukee Monday - Iowa Author: train513 Seems to me , "Jitney" refers to a nickle , which was the cost of a ride on a very old bus-type vehicle. They were called "Jitney Taxis" , and developed into the Greyhound-type busses which were so common in later years. This was written up in a short history of the Greyhound Corporation , and provided to passengers back in the 1950's .
