BB73: Rock Island blues ....
Author: valmont

BB got this shot @ 'Sable' (Denver) on 12/11/76. Units were #4314,4301,4332. Have read mixed 'reviews' of this scheme ... what's your opinion?

I liked it , helped when it was clean and not faded.

I like it.  Like the locomotives pulling that train, the image is ROCK solild.  And I don't mean that as a joke in any way.  Nice photo!  The owners of the "new" ROCK in Mississippi would be proud!

Any time you got 3 Rock units in the same scheme and clean you scored big !

Let`s see. Lettering intact. Doors closed. No flood of oil pouring down the frame. What`s not to like?

The visual image of a brave but doomed railroad trying to survive???? I'll take this paint scheme and the corporate emotions behind it anytime over constant, in your face, worn-out patriotism STILL out there, getting more & more raggedy looking all the time...

Never cared for light blue on locomotives.

Looks nice in a matched consist like this one, but didn't go with the various shades of red and tuscan of other Rock units.

As previously mentioned, when it was new and/or clean, it looked good, and matched sets are hard to beat.  But I think that painting any part of a locomotive white (*cough* KCS) is questionable. My opinion is worth just what you paid for it...nothing. :-)

Split decision. I like the colors, but I never cared for the stylized R logo or THE ROCK tagline.

It's a great scheme.  Make no mistake about it!

At the time I wasn't a big fan.  But coming up on 41 years later, I think it's pretty nice.  My favorite though was the big speed lettering, whether on maroon or red.

+1

Although I concede the points made that this matched set with doors closed and clean and lettering intact looks "mighty fine".

I'll respecfully disagree on the bravery, that money could have been better spent in almost any other way than new paint and signage and stationary and so on.

I'll agree with this, and I never cared for "bankruptcy blue" either.  The money the Rock spent on paint would have been far better served fixing their track.
