Panama Limited in Hammond,La
Author: gcm

Aug 76
A few bags to load on the rapidly approaching northbound Panama Limited at Hammond,La.
Nice size crowd waiting to board.
An E unit along with a P30CH and a converted E B unit to a steam generator car are leading the train.
413 looked like an ex-IC unit but I believe it has been determined before that it is ex-CB&Q.

Interesting mix, and no portals in the E unit.

Unique period for Amtrak equipment. Lasted maybe 2-3 years with P30CH and E8s co-existing on trains? Great catch. Thanks for sharing.

Nice catch!!  Old IC RR MaComb, MS based passenger train crews worked Macomb-New Orleans-Canton-Macomb.  MaComb, MS engine crews worked to and from New Orleans.

Like one(esp)  and two a lot.  Interesting that few bags, short trippers?  Old style suitcases and maybe a hat carier.

I've read that ex-IC E-units were assigned to the Panama for cab-signal compatibly north of Carbondale.

Roster info says AMT 413 was CB&Q 9950, but the 3 bulb Gyralite, eyebrows on the class lights, and the fact it is leading on the IC, which required IC cab signals in Illinois, all say that this unit is ex-IC.

Who wants to figure out a 1970's roster question?  BSB

Online roster info says the serial number for #413 was 9688, which is not a serial number that was carried by an I.C. locomotive.  Serieal number information at several sources cite this serial number as CB&Q 9944B, becoming BN 9950, then to AMTK 344, then to AMTK 413.

BUT

The locomotive in the photo has multiple I.C. details that photo of "Q" 9944B did not have.  In addition to the tri-light nose light, the toeholds from the door to the nose were common to all I.C. E-Units.

Perhaps this locomotive was shopped at Paducah for Amtrak and got I.C. details, or the roster numbers got crossed up somewhere and the original error spread.  Don't know either way.
