Cajon Pass, Overtake + Desert Wind, Early 1980s

Interesting lighting on the first two. Rarely recall seeing  older and newer Amtrak units together
like pictured here on the Desert Wind.

F40PH's and SDP40F's did mix and mingle on a few western long distance trains in 1980-81.  Can you read the road number on the rear of the SDP40F?

Very interesting consist for the Desert Wind.  I'm sure the train had ample power for the road.

Fuzzy. Either 571 or 511.

Interesting as they were normally the other way around since it took a while to equip the F40's with ATS, the 500's usually led?

I was hoping Jim would look at the original photo and tell us.  I can "blow up" the posted image too, but 1000 pixels is 1000 pixels and there's no "hidden resolution" to be revealed that way.

The reason I'm curious is I'm not aware of any SDP40F's in the 500's that got heavier pass-through HEP cabling to enable them to trail an F40, but that third car is clearly an Amfleet.

Nice series! Pretty neat seeing those Upper Merion & Plymouth hoppers with the Fast Forties!
