Emil: rainbow from the driver's seat
Author: santafe199

Fifty years ago this summer you could see rainbow colors all over the brand new Burlington Northern system. Mr Emil Albrecht shot himself a piece of that rainbow on a summer 1971 visit to Cheyenne. After looking in Google Maps I’m thinking Emil got this shot while pacing this train from Southwest Drive. Yo Vince! Is this train just coming off of that “perch” you mentioned earlier today? (this enquiring mind wants to know… ;^)

1. Still dressed in Chinese Red, CB&Q-lettered 891 leads some new Cascade Green C&S paint and 2 covered wagon B-units from up on the “Mainstreet”. This manifest is rolling south(?) in Cheyenne, WY on August 25, 1971.
Original Ektachrome slide by Emil Albrecht, from the James W. Watson collection.

Thanks for looking back!

Seems like your comment about Southwest Drive is right, it makes a sharp bend to the Southwest after it crosses the tracks and is a good distance from the tracks as it goes south is more parallel, but some distance from the tracks ... shot seems to fit that view.

#891 was a C&S U30C

Cool shot of a somewhat strange-looking consist. You can almost taste the rainbow...
