A Couple Of Anything - Illinois Central
Author: refarkas

Here are two redos of ICG locomotives stored in Paducah, Kentucky on August 25, 1972. Visible are some E-units not being leased by or sold to Amtrak in Amtrak's early years including IC 4039 (E9A), 4107 (E9B), 2037 (E9A), and switcher IC 1003 (NW2).

Thanks Bob for sharing those fine photos.  It was amazing to me that Amtrak did not purchase or lease those E-9's as they would have been the newest E units built by GM.  I know all of the E-9's that the B&O owned were purchased by Amtrak.

"New" is a relative thing. The IC ex-FEC E9As in the 2000s were built in 1955. Most of the IC E9As in the 4000s were built in 1954 and 1956. By the time 1971 came around, there wasn't much difference in age between E8s and the majority of E9s. Amtrak had many E8s and E9s to choose from. I assume they chose based on factors such as when the 567s and traction motors had most recently been overhauled.

I havewa soft spot in my heart for IC E9 #4039 - it led the last westbound Hawkeye on April; 30, 1971, bringing an end to westbound IC passenger service on the Iowa division.  Somewhere I have a photo of me standing next to it in Freeport IL as it made its staton stop in my hometown.
