Southern Pacific (SP) SW1500 2682 is the sole power on the Crockett Rocket, heading west near Crockett, CA in May 1977.
SP 2682 is an SW1500. It's from SP Class ES415-6. Reportedly: (sources include Strapac's fantastic SP Compendium series) it was built in 1973 as SP 2682, SP Class ES415-6, serial number 4608-40.
Disposition: reportedly, it became UP 1227, then UPY 1227, then NREX 1227.

Great photo of the Crockett Rocket. I remember seeing those Cruds all over the Bay Area as a kid.

Not "cruds".  Very good switch engines.

I don't recall the Crockett Rocket, but I do remember the Rocklin Rocket when I was working 5 & 6. 

There was the Double Track Local, then the Crockett Rocket

I thought the "crud" moniker came about after the SW1500's became so prolific that railfans would say something like; "crud, here comes another SW1500."

Perhaps this was just an internet rumor.

 

Thanks for the comments folks. We called them cruds not because they were bad switch engines. They were great switch engines. My dad was a Western Division Hoghead and he really liked them. We called them cruds because they were ubiquitous and they replaced all the F-M, ALCo, BLH switchers. They were so common we'd often not photograph them. I would, maybe, take a picture of them with the black and white camera because,  black and white was cheaper and, well, it was just a crud...

Photo - SP 2524 an SW1500 at the diamonds in Stockton, CA, on Sunday, April 8, 1973.

According to good sources, including Strapac's fantastic SP Compendium series, SP 2524 was built in 1969 by EMD as a model SW1500, SP 2524, SP Class ES415-3, builder's number 35217.
The disposition of this locomotive is, was assigned number UP 1110, sold unrenumbered to Railserve 2524, renumbered Rail Switching Service 5524, assigned to SC Johnson Waxdale in Sturtevant, WI.
