1-2) During the San Francisco Zephyr years the UP Cheyenne station was like a stub station.
This is the westbound and coming up from Denver, passengers rode backwards.
The engines would  run around the train for placement headed west.
The eastbound would do the same thing.
In Denver the units would also run around the train except fresh SDP40F engines would be used.

3) Plenty of mail and express this day - looked like the old days.

4) Getting fueled and watered, the train is about ready to continue west.
A UP Centennial engine led train in the background will also head west after a crew change.


5) #5 is departing.
Amtrak left the station and moved facilities to Borie in Oct 1979.

A few of these may be reposts but all have been rescanned.

I remember handling/throwing thousands of those loose US Mail sacks.  It was good exercise!

i was just at CRRM, they are getting ready for the Polar Express, not sure which steamer was getting hot; but they have a book the facilities of Cheyenne, which I'll look at sometime.


Old chian when amtrak stopped there was neat on so many levels, old timers would  come down to watch, dispatchers may have still been upstairs, highest seniority hog heads from Denver, locals watching, the art deco bus depot ACROSS the street, then they had to move it out boring borie

the  assigned sdps for this part had UP's cab signals  tested in DUT  before 5 left  i suppose they would have to test the other one in Chian before it left, if there was a problem Bob would have to go wye the power in East Chian, or maybe borrow a unit, or run at restricted speed?

Old UP RR Cheyenne based passenger train crews worked to and from Green River, WY.  Cheyenne based engine crews worked to and from Rawlins, WY.
