Thanks for sharing this awesome picture. One year before this was taken,  I was running Southern Railway passenger trains 5 & 6, the Piedmont.  One of the Piedmont's alternating sets of power were the same two Southern FP7's pictured on the Coast Starlight - the 6148 and the 6146.  Back in April 76, they were MUed "elephant style" on the Piedmont.  They were good runners.  In their last years I have seen other pics of the 6146 and the 6148 MUed together.  It amazes me.  I think I saw a shot of them in the scrap line - still together.  In happier times a pic of the 6148, 6146, and me on the point of No. 5 - the Piedmont appeared in Trains Magazine article in 1976.

WOW, that's a lot of history in this photo! Does anyone happen to know what industry that is in the background with the UP hopper and BN boxcar?

It's a flour mill.  The building of the Fremont Bridge in the background required a huge concrete pier that really messed up the previously available good vision for engineers switching in the SP&S Hoyt Street Yard.  The central span of the bridge was built downstream on the Willamette River, barged upriver, and raised into place from the barges.
