If freight is still being hauled on the NEC, why did the electric locos go away?  Seems cheaper to keep them running, or order new ones.  PENNSY and CONRAIL made it work--why can't today's RR's do the same?

Too costly to maintain electric locomotive or buy new ones when they had tons of diesels of all types running around.   The diesels could go anywhere, and the electrics would be stuck on the corridor and out to Harrisburg.
