Around twenty years ago, the SP fleet of SDP45's (and GP40P-2's) had been relegated to freight service. The former Bay Area commuter power had been replaced by then-new CalTrain F40's. This was a special treat for SP fans, as the unique locomotives were strewn across the system in the freight pool.

Back in October 26, 1985, an extremely heavy RVCIM led by SDP45 3201, strains to lift a 10,768 ton freight through Bealville, CA. There's a problem with the 3201 though, as evident of the brakeman out on the walkway. Somewhere above here, the decision was made to add more units. Memory escapes me now as to where these were put on. When all was said and done, the train had three manned helper sets in addition to the road power with a total unit count of 19!

Here's the seven unit head end helper set. You can see the SP 3201 in the middle with the white horns. Cool touch.

The train finally makes it way to Cable X-Over. I wish I had video of this monster!

And lastly, the head end helper units were cut off at Tehachapi. Here's the 3201 near Mojave. It's all down hill now. Thanks for looking.
