More Bay Area Memories"-- PART 2..

"The Old and the New" and the Road to Oblivion!

SP Daylight locomotive # 6028 has just been cutoff of Train # 27, the "Overland Limited", inside the giant trainshed at "Oakland Pier" and is now headed Westbound on the "runaround" track out onto the pilings, that will enable it to run on the outside of the trainshed building proper, and run light back to West Oakland Yard for servicing.. The 6028 is greeted by the Ferryboat "SAN LEANDRO" which has only about 45 days left to operate on San Francisco Bay. The two icons of a Southern Pacific dynasty are overshadowed by the immense gingerbread trainsheds of "The MOLE", which was built in 1882, abandoned entirely in 1960 and torn down in 1966.

That SN caboose is a beauty. All wood; truss rods; arch bar trucks, for heavens sake. How old were those things, I wonder.
