Rio Grande GP60 #3156 is the last new locomotive delivered in D&RGW paint. The geep was tagged onto a large SP/SSW GP60 order and delivered new in 1990.

The 3156 is pictured leading SP's eastbound ROGJM (Roper-Grand Junction Manifest) on Soldier Summit at at Rio with Mt. Loafer in the distance.

After the SP/UP merger, the assignment of 3156 changed to work in local service out of Denver. Unfortunately it would received a full UP repaint and was renumbered to the 5702 on May 14, 1998. By January 7, 2001 it would be renumbered one more time to the UP 1902.

Just curious why would they assign such a high horsepower engine to local service out of Denver? Seems you would want it out with the rest of the SP GP60's pulling for all it's worth.

Hi GP30-

As James noted in his original post, the unit received a full repaint to UP 5702 in May 1998. When UP renumbered a good portion of its fleet to accomodate the SD70M's, its number was changed to UP 1902. To the best of my knowledge, it is still in active service on UP (although I'm not sure of its current location).

Oh yeah the old DRGW 3156 (1902) is still roaming the rails. Currently shown as being in Sansom (?) Texas. It hasn't been in Colorado in some time.

The DRGW 3154 (1900) is in an odd place, Shreveport, LA! That thing sure gets around.
