San Manuel Arizona RR in 1992
Author: TonyJ

In 1992 my wife and visited many mining railroads in the Southwest. One stop we made was to the San Manuel Arizona Railroad out of San Manuel, AZ. (Where else?) We had a great time touring the facilities and I enjoyed looking around inside the cab of one of the Alco RS3s. Here are the locomotives we found on that Sep. 14, 1992 day.

Here is Magma #3, formerly GP9R SP3882. - Tony J.

Magma Alco RS3 #9. At the time it was out of service with a broken crankshaft. In 1995 our NRHS chapter purchased and moved our Baldwin S8 switcher (Medco No. 8) from the nearby Magma Arizona Railroad. Both the MA and SMA were owned and operated by the same company and we were invited to select at scrap value prices any Alco components we could use on the Baldwin or with other chapter equipment. We departed with a nearly overloaded 12 foot trailer of parts. The good people at SMA were very generous and we can't thank them enough. It's too bad the smelter and most of their operation is no longer running. - Tony J.

I was able to ride the line round trip in 1985 aboard their caboose.  Very friendly crew.
