CP thanksgiving operations
Author: inCHI

I understand some railroads may be shut down for the Thanksgiving holiday in the US - CSX I hear is on Thursday and Friday. CP, though is still running some trains. A 602 east (ethanol loads I think) passed Rondout on its way to Chicago about an hour ago. Now I hear a 9818 West, with 9,171 feet, passing the detector. (Didn't catch symbol.) Is this perhaps part of the EHH plan as well?

Why would they shut down for the American Thanksgiving when they didn't shut down for Canadian Thanksgiving?
Railroading is normally a 24/7/365 type of business.

I suspect it may be difficult to scare up crews for many jobs. Customers are shut down, so the locals have little to drop off and pick up, etc.

Many employers are shut on Friday, too.

I know for Canadian Thanksgiving there were only a few local customers that shut down and most of the traffic still running was the big stuff, grain, potash, coal, intermodal etc. The crews that wanted to work the holiday were getting paid more money so I imagine the wasn't a huge shortage of people.

Oil Train, the Ethanol trains have numbers starting at 630.

With different labor agreements in the US, yard and local crews receive extra pay for working the holiday; these expenses can be reduced by holding in such jobs, and curtailing road operations.
