No Pipeline, No Problem
Author: cp1400

A relatively new train number has appeared out west here. CP Train 605 carrying crude oil has been making periodic appearances in the Fraser River Canyon moving oil from Saskatchewan to Port Westward, Oregon. With an advance warning I was able to catch one of these trains recently bringing its black gold to the coast.

1. Anderson River bridge west of Boston Bar. Like so many locations along the Fraser River this location is slowly being overgrown.

2. Along the Fraser River between Como and Hells Gate.

3. Through Rosedale BC now in the Fraser Valley.

4. At Matsqui Jct train 605 diverges off CN to cross the Fraser River to CP track.

5. West of Mission on CP Cascade Sub about 18 miles from interchange with BNSF.

6. Going away look at the symmetry of these tank trains.

It seems for now there is two train sets in the cycle so loaded trains seem to show up every eight to tens days or so.

Nice. Just handed it off to the BN about 3 hours ago. 8617 leading.

I guess I should've clarified that we handed off the empty going back.

Really nice set of pictures, thanks for sharing them.

They tell a great story.

(Any chance the railfan visual improvement and chainsaw company might make an appearance near that bridge with the overgrowing trees?)

Loaded. Yes. Empty. Not always. I think the CP prefers them coming back duped but it's a pain when there's 2 trains in the facility. Seems like most of the time the BN ones get the dupe pulled off in Pasco for the run down the river. Rumor has it that the CP trains might start coming via the SI/Washy line.

Where does CP hand off these trains to BNSF?

CP hands these trains off to BNSF in New Westminster BC. BNSF hauls the loads south on the New Westminster, Bellingham, Seattle and a short bit of the Fallbridge Sub to the connection with Portland & Western for the run up the Astoria line to Port Westward.

The empties had been coming in the reverse direction through New Westminster but I haven't seen any for a while. Some comments indicate they are going east on BNSF into Montana for delivery to CP.

Just last Saturday I photographed (with a film camera, sorry, nothing to post) a train like this in Everett, WA's Delta Yard on one of the newly-laid holding tracks, on the east side of the yard. On the point, facing north, were three CP locos: two AC4400CWs and one ES44CW (hope I got those designations right). Two of the three locos had the "golden rodent" scheme; the other one was in the current scheme. I was wondering where they were headed. From your description, I now believe they were bound for Vancouver, as if they were going back over Stevens Pass or Stampede Pass, I believe the locos would have been pointed south. Anyway, GREAT photos, CP1400 (as always); thanks for sharing those with us.

What's the PLACARD "UN" number on those tank cars? I know it's not UN1987, as that's ethanol. What's the UN number for CRUDE OIL?

crude oil is UN 1267. Get a copy of DOT Emergency Response handbook, about $10. You can buy them in truck stop ot maybe order on-line.

Wow, last year at this time I drove through Fraser Canyon and it was covered in snow and ice. Looks like it's been a pretty mild winter there. I'll be passing through again next month, hopefully the weather remains mild.
