No Spring in Nova Scotia
Author: cn6218

Spring arrived in Nova Scotia at 19:45 on Friday evening, but you wouldn't know it by looking outside at the weather.  Earlier in the day, VIA 15 got away on time at 12 noon from the Halifax station, and slowly negotiated its way through the snow choked Ocean Terminals yard trackage.  As soon as the passenger train was out of the way, the snow jet resumed blowing out switches.

On Saturday, the first full day of Spring,  407 was heading west through Windsor junction with the daily Dartmouth to Moncton freight.  There are some autoracks visible on the end of the train, but CN has been having trouble with the heavy snowfall at Autoport in Eastern Passage (see Frank's post about train 323 one line down).  The cars come off the ships and are stored outside before being loaded onto the rail cars.  Many of the parking lots have snow packed in between the cars at roof height, so it's a very slow process to dig them out.  407 will usually have two dozen autoracks each day, but there have been some days this winter with none!

Have faith.  Spring will eventually come although it's -17C in Montreal as I write this.

We could sure use some of that snow on our mountains here in California.  Our reservoirs are about empty and there are predictions we may be out of water within one year.

Actually, the major reservoirs like Shasta and Oroville are about 60 percent full, and there will always be some water, as was admitted by the person to whom that "prediction" was attributed, who said he was either misquoted or misinterpreted.  There's groundwater, and it's not like there will be zero precipitation over the course of a year.

The photos do help explain why everyone is moving away from Frostland to California.

Great images, especial # 2...I do not envy you and your winter this year.

Spring is coming...A warming trend is heading your way.

Have a look at Tuesday Test...your turn is coming!
