NREX 4321 in Western Canada
Author: Train611

Hi,

NREX 4321 was working in a westbound coal train earlier this week. This is the first time I have seen this unit.

Can someone help with the details about the locomotive and future use?

I believe it is a unit from National Railway Equipment.

1. CP8744 West leads a coal train into Kamloops with 4321 working in the consist.

2 & 3. NREX4321 a little closer.Thanks for looking and any answers.

NREX 4321 crapped out on it's first trip.  It is being tested for comparison to the 5000's.

CP SD60 6250 is also in the coal circuit as a test.  Sounds like some concern surfacing over the 5000's which are getting the job done, but getting "overworked" in the process.

Time will tell.

Here's a story about NRE 4321 in Railway Age:

http://www.railwayage.com/index.php/mechanical/locomotives/nre-4321-shoving-strong-after-16-weeks.html?channel=35

NRE calls it an NR33CDE-IAC. It's been upgraded to 3300 hp, among other things: "NRE equipped the six-axle locomotive, No. 4321, with a 3,300hp-645E3-AR10-D78s extended DB propulsion platform. Equipped with NRE’s NFORCE microprocessor, traction control card and Independent Axle Control (IAC) modules, NRE says the locomotive is achieving a tractive effort of 33%-34%. Fully fueled, the locomotive weighs 192.5 tons  (385,000 pounds)

Strange that they apparently dipped the original fancy paint scheme in black.

I think this is the only one -- a demonstrator or test unit.

I too thought it was odd they trashed the fancy paint.  Maybe all the intricacies began to peel and fade or whatever as was happening to the EMDX SD70ACe demos before they left the factory.
