Quebec Gatineau

Quebec Gatineau keeps its power spotless, a welcome change from from CP and CN which rarely seem to wash a locomotive.  Train is westbound on the Lachute sub Aug 21, 2015.

What is that second unit in the consist with the shortened radiator section?  The TSG has 800, 2300 and 3800 listed which could fit the part of the road number I can see.  I didn't think the slugs (800) had any radiators at all.  And what's up with the dynamic brake blister on 2600?  It doesn't look like it is operative any longer?

The second unit is the 2300. It is a GP39-2C made from a GP40.  QG has four on their roster, #2300-2303.  They were rebuilt by Morrison-Knudsen for Virginia Railway Express.  The 12-cyl 2300 hp engine requires less radiator area than the 16-cylinder 3000 hp prime mover it replaced.  Hence the shortened radiator section.  The vacant space in the rear of the unit houses a small diesel engine used to prevent freeze up in winter.

As for the 2006, it began life as a Pennsy GP35 before passing to Penn Central and then Conrail.  Conrail planned an extensive rebuild program to convert GP35 units to GP38 spec by removing the turbos and installing 645 power assemblies.  One unit was done before the program was shelved.  That unit ultimately became QG 2006.  As you noticed it does not have dynamic brakes.
