Canadian Railroads > Flying the flag, in Canada

Adding some colour, as well as American patriotism to the usual all-NS lashups on CN 528/529, SD70M UP 3806 with the UP wings on the nose and the American flag on the hood leads CN 529 through Montreal West with a short train this morning. Trailing are NS 6983 & NS 9535. Of note was was three flatcars with rail, with two in the middle of the train and one on the tail end.

Not sure if that "shiftable" load on the rear would be legal south of the border? Nice catch.

This train originates on Norfolk Southern in the U.S. as NS 31T, so apparently yes.

Train marshalling instructions can be quite a challenge at times to interput and apply in the field. At one time a LPS (loads prone to shift) had to be marshalled as close to the leading locomotive, if possible not exceeding 2000 with the intent that the crew would be able to observe the load while entroute. On the "former" BC Rail, we could not have a open / shiftable load on the last car with the reason being that it would not destroy the SBU if it shifted.  Doug
