Canadian Railroads > Day and Night on the Squamish SubDate: 01/19/17 00:57 Day and Night on the Squamish Sub Author: cp1400 The frigid weather that blanketed the west coast at the start of the year presented some cold and snowy options on the south end of BC Rail. Early Jan 1 saw former BC Rail Dash 8-40CMu #4610 lead train 546 from North Vancouver to Squamish. There's not too many opportunities to catch these units leading on home rails so the chase was on.
The the next day a planned trip with friends yielded more opportunities chasing trains 546, 571 and 568. 1. BCOL 4610 makes a rare appearance leading a train on former home rails at mile 9 Squamish Sub. 2. Switching at Squamish resulted in 4610 being relegated to third in consist on train 571, Here they meet train 570 at the north end of Birken along Gates Lake. 3. Late morning Jan 2 northbound train 546 from North Vancouver to Squamish was at Deeks. The wind was howling here and salty water was being whipped up from the white caps of Howe Sound. cp1400 Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 01/19/17 01:10 by cp1400. Date: 01/19/17 01:03 Re: Day and Night on the Squamish Sub Author: cp1400 4. Train 571 on the Cheakamus grade at a place known as Daisy Lake which is between Garibaldi and McGuire.
5. Delays to southbound train 568 resulted in 571 waiting for them at Birken in the blue hour. The lights of approaching 568 illuminate the train with a Crescent Moon, Venus and Jupiter in the night sky. 6. Train 571 rolls off into the night along Gates Lake. cp1400 Edited 1 time(s). Southbound train 568 encountered heavy snow in the area of the Nairn Falls highway crossing south of Pemberton.
8. From the middle of frozen Green Lake we see train 568 steaking along the east shore as snow cats work through the night to groom trails on Blackcomb Mountain and more stars than you can count. 8. Into the upper reaches of the Cheakamus Canyon train 568 eases past mile 57 on the 2.2% grade down to Squamish. cp1400 Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 01/19/17 01:15 by cp1400.
