MLW Monday: Across the Seaway
Author: rob_l

Running extra on the Adirondack Subdivision, CP train 522 eases across the St. Lawrence River and the Seaway on May 4, 1985. 4555 was fresh out of the paint shop. Unfortunately, it experienced problems and was removed from the train at Farnham.

Best regards,

Rob L.

That's one heck of a composition, plenty of mechanical interest in the lift bridge with puffy clouds and blue skies to boot. What are the model types?

Which bridge is this?

That's the St Lawrence River Bridge. The lift span is over the St Lawrence Seaway. The tower is Seaway Tower which, in addition to opperating the lift bridge, controlled the switches and signals at Lasalle and Adirondack Junction. Seaway Tower was closed and its functions moved elsewhere about two years ago. It was the last leverman's job in Canada, I think.

Fabulous shot, Rob. But I'd be surprised if the unit was painted at St Luc. Overhauls and painting were performed at Angus Shops in those days. St Luc only did running repairs.

You've identified the models correctly with the exception of omitting the hyphen from the model numbers. MLW identified the units as M-630 and M-636. I know I'm a pain to insist on the hyphen. But the builder knows best.

Great photo; I'll avoid recycling other peoples comments, but I'll add this - I love the piggybacks!

Thanks. The on-line roster I referenced says 4507 was the last C-630M and 4508 was the first M-630, but evidently that's wrong. Which unit was the first M-630 for CP?

Best regards,

Rob L.

You're right and I'm wrong. The 4508 was indeed an M-630. In the photo I thought I saw the double air intakes of a C-630M. My mistake. I've corrected my post above.

Delivery of the M-630 units began with Pacesetter master units 4551, followed by 4550, 4552, 4553. Locotrol master units began with 4570 and that series went to 4581 but were not delivered in sequence. The 4550 series eventually was filled in up to 4557. The Pacesetter repeater series began at 4508 and went to 4516. Then some units from all series were renumbered to create more Locotrol masters. It's a tough roster to follow.

In any event the 4508 was the lowest numbered M-630 but certainly not the first one outshopped by MLW.

What were you standing on to get the high viewpoint?

Standing along the railing of the highway viaduct. Parked off the shoulder of the road at the base of the viaduct and walked back up.
