Wainwright Sub Wednesday - CP Overhead at Unity, SK
Author: feclark

As a change from the usual CN action along the Wainwright Sub, today I'm posting a couple of CP freights passing over the Wainwright on the Hardisty Sub. According to the TSG, this is at MP 23.0 on the Hardisty Sub, with Unity on CP being MP 20.8. As much as we had heard about the busy CP north line, the day before, July 20, 2015, we'd arrived around 1430 and by 2030, nothing had moved on CP. Next day, July 21, we got two CP freights, both WB, in the 0700-1630 window. Not exactly a busy line, at least when we were there.
1. As sunny as the day was, a high thin cloud bank bit our first train, a WB potash move whose head end, CP 9360, came over at 1205, lens set at 21 mm.
2. The mid-train DPU was, happily, CEFX 1045, at 1209. My buddy shoots video, and does a train like this ever chew up time and battery; lens set at 35 mm.
3. Finally, at 1213, DPU pusher CP 8959 came across the Wainwright; lens set at 22 mm. Some direct sun would have been nice, and with a bit of greed, a CN EB too.

4. This one made our day. We heard this one getting its clearance from Wilkie to Macklin, as I recall, so we did a bit of figuring as to when it ought to show up. Sun was out, canola was yellow in the background, and all was looking good. Then CN got close, and we thought we were going to lose the shot of an afternoon WB snaking out on CN (last week's post), but CP got a hustle on and let us get this shot, then it cleared the overpass to let us get the CN shot. At 1558, CEFX 1007 leads an unidentified CP GE, plus GP38-2 3104, with an oil train; lens set at 125 mm, take the shot, and bail down the embankment.

Ken,

Just over a year ago I posted up VIA Nos. 1 & 2 at this location, at https://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?15,4228778,4228778#msg-4228778.

The bridge over the CN (former GTP) is interesting. The CP "Prairie North" route to Edmonton is of similar vintage to the CN line it crosses over.

The combination of concrete and trestle is unusual. Here's a guess. The trestle part was once much longer and was replaced by infilling to create the embankment visible beside the bridge.
