Canadian Railroads > Canada Adventure Day 5: Ontario Northland Heritage Unit #1730Date: 03/22/19 07:27 Canada Adventure Day 5: Ontario Northland Heritage Unit #1730 Author: Ohiorailfan On our second day on the ONT we finaly got to see the 1730 lead a train. The day started with us trying to see the 113 but they were delayed by 6 hours so we heard the 1730 was on 308 out of Kidd(Timmins). We got there as they were preparing to leave with a whopping 6 cars. The 1730 last year was repainted into its original scheme as it wore in the 70's. The locals pointed out the snow plow lost its yellow stripping, but I would never have known the difference. We ended up chasing it from Kidd all the way to Englehart. After that we went to Cobalt to see the 113 with ONT SD40-2 #1734 leading. They would come into Englehart and hop on the 214 power and take off back south towards North Bay. Enjoy! Also for anyone who is interested, we ended up renting an F150 for this trip. Thankfully we did because my car would have got stuck multiple times. I'm one that doesn't mind the weather as long as it isn't raining.

That barn in the last photo certainly gives a special touch to the photo.

Was also wondering about the vehicle, having lived in Cleveland and seen Lake Effect snow I had figured the vehicle was some hardened form of salt resistant, multi-wheel drive rail fan vehicle. Wrong again...
A rental is no real surprise since they take a beating and then just go back to the lot. I'm guessing it was a pick up truck serving as a camera platform on the back, judging by the angle of many of the photos. Curious if it was 4wd or had snow tires of some sort. Great series, thanks for posting.
