CN 5187
Author: refarkas

CN 5187 is sitting in front of the VIA station in Brantford, Ontario on August 14, 1982. Coming up at the back left is a VIA train on the closest track.

Nice CN action photo.  Often wondered how effective the cab door snow shield was.
Thanks for the interesting posting.

Think the snow shields were to keep fine cold snow out of the inertial air intake behind the cab, rather than protecting the cab door.

That was the intended purpose. How well they work is another story.

Were the SD 40’s with no dynamics used in the praire districts only? I can’t imagine them in use to the spiral tunnels on a coal train!

Coal trains don't go through the Spiral Tunnels, they join and leave the mainline at Golden BC. That's also a CP issue, whereas CN has a mainline with grades under 1% all the way to the coast. CP ordered dynamics on most if not all of their power right from early days of dieselization, CN finally started ordering dynamics late in the SD40-2 era for their coal branches in Alberta.
