Canadian Railroads > Before they hit the wooden bridgeDate: 12/30/21 16:01 Before they hit the wooden bridge Author: newtonville150 From 1982 to 2008 and beyond, among my favourite railfan haunts were the twin wooden bridges
spanning the CN Kingston sub and CP Belleville sub at Nichols Road, Newtonville, ON. In June 2006 the CN bridge was taken out by a shifted load on a CN freight. The CP bridge fell apart more recently. In the old days there were three passable dirt roads between Newtonville Road in the west and Hope-Clarke Boundary Road in the east. None are usable today. Nichols Road was the most easterly of the three. Elliott Road crossed CN and grade and went under CP and Lancaster Road went under CN and crossed CP at grade. Nichols Road is MP 279 on the Kingston sub, and approximately MP 150.5 on the Belleville sub (thus my screen name on Trainorders.) In June 2002 the CN bridge's demise was still 4 years in the future, when I shot CN train 369, in the hands of Dash 8-40CM 2424 and Dash 9-44CW 2559. A typical early 2000s consist. Possibly the same day, a CP eastbound (probably 502) is seen approaching their wooden bridge, powered by SD40-2's 5594 and 5959 and SD40-2F 9021. Also typical of the time. ...John Reay Springhill, NS Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 12/30/21 16:06 by newtonville150. While it is not as busy for traffic, are the wooden bridges over the parallel CN and CP mainlines west of London still there? I believe it is Deerfield Road. Magellan Date: 01/03/22 15:20 Re: Before they hit the wooden bridge Author: MEKoch Old railroad trick: dispatch train with a heavy too-high load. Result: bridge is gone. Oooops. Sorry they say. (problem solved.............)
