Same Power Westbound as Eastbound
Author: cn6218

Whatever power comes into Halifax on Z120 will usually leave that evening on counterpart Z121.  The exception are 4-axle units being ferried in or out to be used as switchers, and now that there are two trains a day, each way, things may get mixed up a bit.

But that was the pattern on June 22, when Z120 arrived with SD70M-2 8947 and AC GEs 2972, 3014 and 3067 at 13:09 in Birch Cove.

The clouds lifted that evening in time for a picture of container ship Humen Bridge leaving the Fairview container pier.  For some reason the ship didn't leave the harbour right away, but dropped anchor in Bedford Basin.  Perhaps they were waiting for the tide to drop a bit before attempting to go under the two Halifax Harbour bridges.

Half an hour later, at 20:25, Z121 was leaving town without waiting for the tide.  As expected, the same power was on this train (no DPU).  The roundhouse crew fueled and otherwise serviced them, but didn't rearrange them before departure.

Those intermodal trains there must have quite the inverse relationship with the different types of containers.  I'm assuming the larger domestic containers come in loaded from Toronto distribution facilities for local businesses, but the smaller international containers are mostly empty.  Going west inland the opposite; empty domestics returning to distribution facilities, loaded international containers filled with imports.

That ship photo is great!  Very effective zoom.
