VIA has recently increased the point fares for corridor travel. The booking site still says the number of points required has been temporarily reduced by 30%.  VIA was charging 7 points for every $ of the fare.  It is now 9.33 points per $.  Travel in sleepers is still a bargain.  Sleepers on the Ocean cost 4.66 points per $. The Canadian is the best deal at 3.18 points per $. Fares, however, on the Canadian have increased a lot in peak-season. Cabins are sold out on almost all peak-season departures. If you can get one, a cabin for 1 between Toronto and Vancouver is typically $3800. Single use of a cabin for 2 is often $4800 or even more.

For the early part of the peak season - May and June - VIA has added an eighth Manor sleeper to the consist of the Canadian. Line 109/209 is now the first sleeper, This sleeper has not been added for July onwards, but it wouldn't surprise me if it will be.

Despite ALL that the Canadian has been through - it's sold out status (coupled with capacity offered) in 2024 proves that VIA built a good brand. Tried to get tickets for a trip in April back in February, and I was only finding berths available. 

Are they still charging you money for taxes on a points trip ?

Sadly, yes. 

I suppose that is permanent.

It may not be permanent. In answer to complaints about the taxes on free tickets, VIA has said changes may be made at a later date.
